Granny's Loaf

When I was a young boy, I often go to my grandmother’s house for a stay over with my little sister. The house was not too big, but really a nice place to stay. It has the ambiance that can make people feel relax and sleepy because of the old house situation that was built in the 80s.

Every time we have a stay over, my grandma always make the same food for us which is a tiny sliced loaf with a ‘Blueband’ margarine (made in Indonesia) sprinkled with a ‘Ceres’ Thousand Rainbow Sprinkles (or ‘Mesyes’ as Indonesian call it) on top of it accompanied by a glass of hot chocolate milk. The smells of the combination of the two was able to wake me and my sister up from our deepest sleep. Sound of hot milk being poured to the glass and the chinking sound of glass with soon-will-be-mine plate with two loafs is always in my mind up until now. I cannot have enough of this feast and always ask for second helping.

My uncle always takes his big stray-like dog for a walk in the morning. So, as we were eating, we always stopped and hide by the time he brought out that big monstrous thing for a walk because my dad always ordered us to stay away from ‘Argo’.

Triggered by this event in the past, I come to like eating bread with hot chocolate until now. Not also bread, but the rest of bakery product as well. Unfortunately, my grandma is already too old to make that loaf again for me and my sister. She doesn’t even remember who I am anymore. That aside, I really love that moment when I was little. Every time there are loaves on the plate with a glass of hot chocolate milk in the morning, I always remember the time I had from grandma’s house stay over. I will always cherish it.
